Pair of Monumental 1970s Cane and Gold Velvet Horseshoe Wingback Chairs

$ 2820
  • Two Gold Velvet Horseshoe Wingback chairs

Exceptional pair of American Hollywood Regency cane and gold velvet lounge chairs, circa 1975–1980, distinguished by their dramatic proportions and sculptural horseshoe-form hardwood frames.

Each chair features a sweeping exposed walnut frame surrounding a deeply button-tufted gold velvet back, with finely woven cane side panels, substantial rolled arms, serpentine seat rails, cabriole-form legs and an elaborately turned front stretcher. The rich gold velvet provides a striking contrast against the dark walnut wood and natural cane.

The design reflects the sophisticated American cane seating produced during this period by manufacturers such as Lewittes Furniture Enterprises, Karel of Cumberland and Century Furniture, although the exact manufacturer of this pair has not been established.

The unusually broad horseshoe crest and substantial exposed hardwood construction give these chairs a commanding architectural presence rarely found in conventional cane wingbacks of the period.
